Coordinated Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies and Master of Public Health (MSPAS/MPH) Dual Degree Program The coordinated Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies and Master of Public Health (MSPAS/MPH) dual degree program will prepare physician assistant students for leadership roles that address community health care needs. The MSPAS/MPH program aims to increase the number primary care clinicians with public health expertise and thus improve access, quality, and cost of care. In addition to developing clinical competencies and skills as a physician assistant, this plan of study provides students with opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration and a public health practice experience with rural primary care clinical community partners. This innovative program enhances physician assistant education with integrated training in public health and primary care and thereby provides students with the information and skills needed to monitor and assess community health, develop and analyze programs and policies, coordinate and integrate care, and utilize appropriate population health measures in quality improvement strategies. Curriculum Students enrolled in the MSPAS/MPH program can complete 26 credit hours of online coursework in public health in the spring and summer terms prior to fall matriculation into the PA program. Courses available for completion during these two terms include the required public health foundational courses in biostatistics, epidemiology, environmental health, health policy, and health behavior. Several public health elective courses are available to meet the curriculum needs and interest of the PA/MPH students. Students then begin the PA Program didactic year in the fall after completing the first two semesters in the UAB SOPH. Twelve credit hours of coursework in the PA program curriculum, such as research methods, health administration, and health behavior, accrue credit toward both degrees. MSPAS/MPH students complete a specially designed integrated public health /primary care internship and tailor their master’s research project topic to address the public health needs of medically underserved communities. Also consider the pa/mph option at u.wa/medex. It isn't well advertised but they have one. As far as why I want a public health/global health program: I want to do overseas work at some point and/or work for the state dept and an mph or dhsc really helps with this. Also if I ever teach having a doctorate gets me further up the pay and seniority scale. I just finished the first yr in a dhsc program and have around 3 yrs to go. EMEDPA, I'm interested in humanitarian aid work overseas & am earning my MSPAS/MPH degree.
Why is a DHSC so helpful & do you have any recommendation for schools that would focus on Emergency medicine? I am also interested in the dual MPH/PA programs but trying to decide if I should do a MPH program first then apply to a PA program. I am a returned Peace Corps Volunteer who majored in Nutrition and fluent in Spanish. I spent 3 years doing work in the Dominican Republic in the health field from building water systems, sanitation, to health classes and medical missions. I have done a lot of interpreting at medical missions and worked with some PA's during my service.

Pa And Mph Dual Programs
I still need to take GRE and take some pre-req classes for a PA program. To get in a MPH program all I need is GRE and apply. I am just trying to figure out what makes the most send for me before I start spending dollars taking pre-req classes.
Peace Corps has some Fellows programs in MPH and I thought maybe getting my MPH first would set me up nicely for a PA program and possibly could get some classes covered and make me a more competitive applicant. I'd love any advice.
